Social media influencers navigating new regulations in Abu Dhabi with a backdrop of the city

Explore the new license requirements for influencers in Abu Dhabi?

Social media influencers who operate in Abu Dhabi are now mandated to secure licenses in order to operate within the UAE, as per a new regulation introduced by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED). In order to be involved in digital and social media marketing projects, content creators and influencers must adhere to the latest regulations. Similarly, companies seeking to collaborate with social media personalities should obtain the required licenses before entering into contracts. ADDED implemented these guidelines as of July 1st, requiring those interested in online campaigns to be informed about the legal requirements.

Who needs a license ?

Licenses are mandatory for:

  • Independent social media personalities in Abu Dhabi.
  • Groups or collectives of influencers working together under a registered company.
  • Businesses that engage influencers for promotional activities.
  • Inside Abu Dhabi’s social media influencer law

Those involved in promoting brands or products on digital platforms must obtain an Influencer Licence to participate in online advertising projects legally and stay clear of fines or regulatory issues. Getting a new requirement may appear to be a hassle, but ADDED has simplified the procedure for easy submission. Those interested can send their forms through the Abu Dhabi government website Tamm. Additionally, individuals and entities involved in digital advertising must possess a permit from the UAE Media Council to demonstrate their compliance with media guidelines at both national and local levels.

What does the new law mean for digital advertising?

Abu Dhabi has implemented new regulations to ensure that social media and digital platforms are more transparent, and that businesses operating on these platforms are more secure. The goal is to regulate digital advertising more effectively and maintain high standards in the online sphere. By enforcing a strict law, influencers will be incentivized to work transparently and accountability, receiving proper payment and legal protection. This will create a sense of trust for businesses collaborating with compliant content creators who fulfill their contractual duties. Abu Dhabi's action aligns with the Emirate’s efforts to create a legally compliant environment for social media professionals.
